SISTERS, OREGON INFORMATION

This sign welcomes visitors to scenic Sisters, Oregon. The town of Sisters, Oregon is a quaint, picturesque village located on the Eastern ridge of the Cascade Mountains. Sisters is located about 20 minutes southwest of Redmond, OR and about the same distance from Bend, which lies further south. Not long ago Sisters was a little known logging village that served as a dot on the map for people venturing from Portland or Eugene, over the Cascades, and on into Bend. Throughout the early decades of the 20th century Sisters grew little –remaining an out of the way village known mostly for the stunning views of the Three Sisters that it offered.

Modern day Sisters, Oregon is a thriving community that is quickly emerging as a treasured alpine village location. The town of Sisters features a thriving arts and crafts community. Many of these arts and crafts fill the shops that line the village. This cultural dynamic is also expressed in the numerous arts and musical festivals held here each year. The combination of this artsy culture, the historical nature of much of the architecture here, and the stunning East Cascades terrain, makes Sisters a major vacation destination.

Stunning Sisters view of the Middle and North Sister. This growing fame is also causing real estate values in the area to soar- as people from California, and the wetter side of the Cascades, move here. The growing popularity of Sisters and this part of Central Oregon in general has also led to the construction of several high end, all purpose resorts such as the Eagle Crest Resort- which lies in the region between Sisters and Redmond, Oregon. As with other Central Oregon locals caught up in recent phenomenal growth trends, Sisters is constantly evolving as new constructon goes up in the area. Many of the townhomes, houses and lodges now being built in the area start at around $400,000. Since 2004, wealthy retirees make up much of Sisters growing annual population.

Sisters is named after the three volcanic peaks, known as the Three Sisters, that are so prominent in the area. Legend has it that these sisters were originally christened Faith, Hope, and Charity by early Christian missionaries. The town officially became known as Sisters when the post office in nearby Camp Polk was closed in the latter 19th century. A naming contest saw locals submit names for the area just south of Camp Polk. And Sisters was the winning submission; fitting considering the fact that the three volcanic peaks that sit almost at the doorstep of the city are a daily aspect of the lives of locals; that was true in the 1880’s and 90’s- and it’s still true today. While the city features charm and character and a welcoming population, it is the stunning vista of these three majestic peaks that draws multitudes of visitors to Sisters each year.

Downtown view of scenic Sisters, Oregon. In addition to offering majestic alpine beauty, a rich arts and crafts culture, and historic buildings, Sisters is also popular for the tremendous outdoor recreation opportunities it offers to locals and Central Oregon visitors alike. Those who make Sisters, Oregon home enjoy mountain biking, hiking, spelunking (in nearby caves left over from the region’s explosive volcanic past), kayaking, and fishing. The incredibly beautiful and diverse geographic setting in which the town of Sisters resides offers mountain-fed and glacial lakes, towering forests of Pine and Juniper trees, and sprawling displays of historic lava flows. Not only does the area surrounding Sisters offer hundreds of forest and mountain trails for outdoor enthusiasts to choose from, but the sparse nature of the Pine terrain here means that at almost any point along the highway one can pull off to the side of the road and in minutes be exploring spectacular “natural” nature trails.

The residents of Sisters, Oregon are determined to maintain the quaint, intimate village feel of the area, even as the town's fame grows with the thousands of people moving into Central Oregon every year. Sisters OR is unique in that, for the most part, major nation-wide food and lodging chains do not choke out the historic feel of the town. Again, city planners and long time residents aim to preserve the current appeal of Sisters- which features not only stunning mountain views, but also a welcoming, small town atmosphere that demonstrates an appreication for arts, music, and the finer things in life.
