The East Cascade community of Sunriver is located within Deschutes County of Central Oregon. Sunriver is part of the greater Bend, Oregon metropolitan area. Like other parts of Central Oregon, Sunriver has undergone rapid development and rapid property value growth over the last several years. The fact that Sunriver serves as a true alpine village serving Mt. Bachelor ski enthusiasts only adds to Sunriver’s perceived value. This fact has seen property values in Sunriver even outpace that of Bend and Sisters.

Once the war ended the camp settlement in the area was almost completely abandoned. The only remnant of Sunriver’s origins are attested to by the Officers Mess Hall that is still run under the management of Sunriver Resort. Origianl developers Donald V. McCallum and John Gray, impressed by the area’s sunny climate and riverway location, christened the new settlement, Sunriver. Condominiums were built in 1968 in conjunction with the completion of Sunriver Lodge, the first of new construction in the area, was completed in 1969. Condos and further development soon followed once the master plan for the new community was established.

Longtime residents of Sunriver, Oregon are no doubt amazed by the community’s growth. Property in the Sunriver of today is really only affordable for the well-to-do. Still, the area’s proximity to Mt. Bachelor and Bend, Oregon means that it’s a popular vacation destination for skiers and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Plans are now in the works for a complete remodeling of the quaint and charming downtown Village core of the Sunriver Resort. The Village was recently bought by a Development company that plans to build new stores, restaurants, and residentional units. In other words, the future of this premier mountain vacation destination is a bright one!
